Re: Highway 52 North Junk Yards
Dear Members of the Board of Supervisors:
The Dubuque County Conservation Society, Inc. Board of Directors passed a resolution at its
February board meeting directing me to write this letter.
More than 30 years ago the Dubuque County Conservation Society approached the board about
the junk yards located on Highway 52 North of Dubuque. We were promised action to remedy
the situation. Today the conditions remain basically the same. In the meantime the County
established the Heritage Trail and Heritage Pond and has made a substantial investment in
money and manpower.
We have on occasion in the past 30 years also expressed our concerns about possible toxic
contamination of the site and adjacent areas and wet lands.
While the City of Dubuque has spent millions to enhance the appearance and environment of the
city its northern entrance is an aesthetic and environmental eye sore. You would hope Dubuque
County and the City of Dubuque could work together to terminate this pathetic situation. It is
long overdue.
Yours truly,
David W. Leifker, Treasurer
