WHEREAS,
The strength of our nation, and all of its states and cities, flows from the promise of
individual equality and freedom of choice; and

WHEREAS,
April 2007 is the 39 anniversary of the passage of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of
1968, better known as the “Fair Housing Act,” which, as amended, declares that
discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing based on race, color,
religion, sex, national origin, familial status or disability is unlawful; and
WHEREAS
, Shelter is a basic human need, and the quality of human life is greatly diminished
when people suffer discrimination, making it essential that America, the State of
Iowa, and the City of Dubuque be rededicated to the policy that housing be available
to all persons on the basis of equality and fairness; and
WHEREAS
, The City of Dubuque is committed to addressing discrimination in our community, to
supporting programs that will educate the public about the right to equal housing
;
opportunities, and to helping assure every resident of their right to fair housing
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM APRIL,
2007, AS
FAIR HOUSING MONTH
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND URGE RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT AND ENDORSE THE
PRACTICE AND POLICY OF FAIR HOUSING AND REAFFIRM THE COMMITMENT TO FAIR
HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL.
