Minutes Library Board Update #40
Carnegie-Stout Public Library
Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
March 26, 2007
Four of seven board member terms expire July 1. The board president
?
has talked with the Mayor regarding the importance of continuity during
the renovation project and it was agreed that board members would
renew their terms by application. Alan has already filed his application.
Use of the Library in February continues an upward trend. Although
?
overall use is up 2%, use by residents of Dubuque is up 4 percent. Visits
to the Library are up 4 percent. Of note is the 24 and 18 percent drop in
Adult and Children's (respectively) video circulations. Although
videotapes are no longer purchased, an average of 3,247 circulations per
month demonstrates that for some patrons it is the preferred format.
67% of the year has lapsed and expenditures are at 65%. Revenue is at
?
71% of projections.
The art audit continues. We have received an appraisal for three works
?
Forest Scene by Maurice Vlaminck is valued between $60 and $80,000.
Last Gleam by Bruce Crane is valued at $18 - $24,000. (Both are on
loan to the museum of art.) Anthony Thieme's Mainstreet Rockport is
valued at $35 -$45,000 and is in the Library's Special collection room.
The VP of the Board and Director of the Dubuque Museum of Art met
?
with Alan Avery and Susan Henricks to discuss a longer term loan on
library-owned art works to the museum. The museum will present a
proposal for the board to review at their next meeting.
The Board voted to recognize one volunteer, one Friend, and one
?
Foundation member at the recognition dinner on May 3.
The Board agreed to join "Leave a Legacy" which is a non-profit
?
organization advocating for charitable giving in wills and estate planning.
The Library will be mentioned in advertisements promoting planned
giving.
The Board authorized the Board President to sign contracts for OPN
?
Architects and Durrant Group so that we can continue moving forward
and stay on target with the renovation. They expressed confidence that
the community will support the project and the fund raising will be
completed on time. The public kick off is expected to be mid-May.
The projected cost of the project is now $6,236,000. The increase of
?
nearly $1 million is due to construction fees inflating in one year, LEED
design and certification, new boilers and air handling units needed to
meet code, and discovering there was no structure in the skylight above
the glass floor. The Board is confident that we can raise half of this
money. The city has committed to the remainder, which will be available
as a match when we raise the first half.
The Board approved a Computer Use Policy for Library Staff, which will
?
be distributed when the Personnel manual is published.
