I am pleased to appoint you to serve on the 2002 Information Technology and
Communications (ITC) Steering Committee for the National League of Cities. Our
cities and towns will face many challenges this year, and your leadership will help
provide needed guidance. Your term begins with the receipt of this letter and
concludes at the adjoUrnment of the 2002 Congress of Cities in Salt Lake City, Utah,
on December 7, 2002.
Steering committees are comprised of approximately 35 local elected officials fi:om
NLC direct member cities. The steering committee process is a competitive one, and
interest is high. If you are unable to fulfill your commitment, please contact the
NLC Policy Office at (202) 626-3176 as soon as possible.
Your responsibilities as a steering committee member include:
Evaluate issues and options pertaining to the policy agenda set by the policy
committee;
Determine if any changes or updates are needed in the National Municipal Policy
for your committee's policy chapter;
Attend at least two meetings, in addition to the Congressional City Conference
(CCC) and the Congress of Cities (CoC), to review staff reports, analyze policy
studies, and draft specific policy recommendations for consideration and passage
by the NLC membership at the CoC in December.
As a 2002 Steering Committee member, you are expected to participate in two
meetings at the CCC in Washington D.C., March 8-12. The ITC Policy Committee
will meet on Saturday, March 9, at 3:15 p.m., and the ITC Steering Committee will
meet on Sunday, March 10, at Noon. The dates and places for the remaining steering
committee meetings will be determined at your committee's meeting on March 10.
The 2002 Congress of Cities will be held on December 3-7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
