Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Gil D. Spence, Leisure Services Manag ~ i SUBJECT: Play Equipment for Lincoln School INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to request City Council approval of the purchase of play equipment for Lincoln School. DISCUSSION The FY 2008 C.I.P. budget contains $80,000 for play equipment at Lincoln School. I have met with the staff of Lincoln School to determine what improvements will be made. We will do the following improvements: • add to the existing deck, greatly expanding the size of the play unit • two Multi-Pondos • mats for under the existing swings • three MVP Goalsetter basketball systems • three benches • four trash receptacles The equipment will be purchased from Boland Recreation at a total cost of $64,900. Remaining funds will be used for excavating, concrete and safety surface. Once installed, the equipment becomes the property of the Dubuque Community School District. play equipment for Lincoln School page two Boland Recreation was chosen because they sell Miracle Recreation Equipment in Iowa. The existing deck we are adding onto is Miracle equipment and the only company that adds to the deck is Miracle Recreation Equipment. When a new play unit is purchased, I give the size of the safety area to be used, the amount of money to be spent, some features I want, the target age group to be served, and I ask the sales people to submit a proposal. We then review all the proposals and select what we feel is the best value. There are five major playground equipment manufacturers represented in Iowa. We have play units from four companies and purchase things from all five representatives. Approval is requested now to allow delivery to be scheduled the first week of July. This will allow for installation to be completed prior to the beginning of the school year. A purchase order will not be written until July. ACTION STEP The action requested is that the City Council approve the purchase of play equipment from Boland Recreation in the amount of $64,900 for Lincoln School. GDS:et
