MEMORANDUM
April 30, 2007
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
SUBJECT: Sign at 5th and White Streets
The Fiscal Year 2008 Ca~ital Improvement Program contains $200,000 for two Port of
Dubuque signs, one at 5t and White and one at the Locust Street Connector. After
evaluating the 5th and White Street proposed sign location, staff feels that the proposed
sign is too large for the site.
Leisure Services Manager Gil Spence recommends City Council approval of the revised
design for the 5th and White Street sign providing one monument sign instead of the
larger sign with three flag poles.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

SUBJECT: Sign at 5th and White Streets
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to request City Council approval to change the sign
at 5th and White Streets.
DISCUSSION
The FY 2008 C.I.P. budget contains $200,000 for two Port of Dubuque signs, one at 5th
and White and one at the Locust Street Connector. Attachment A shows the location of
the 5th and White Streets sign and Attachment B shows what that sign would look like.
As we were moving to final design of this project and evaluated the 5th and White
Streets sign we began to feel the proposed sign is too large for the site. It is a small,
tight site and the entire sign with three flag poles seems too large for the site.
Our thinking is that one entry monument would be sufficient in this location. Attachment
C shows that single monument, labeled Signage. This sign would direct traffic to the
Port of Dubuque, the monument signs on 5th Street, just past the railroad tracks,
announce entry to the Port of Dubuque.
We are in the process of purchasing this small piece of property from the Fischer
Companies to allow placement of the sign.
ACTION STEP
The action requested is that the City Council approve this revision to the 5th and White
Streets sign.
