Experience or education which qualifies you for this board or commission:: As an art historian, I am
particularly interested in the transatlantic relationships between American art, history and culture and
those that happen on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. This interest in cultural exchange is
engrained and inherent to my thinking as both a scholar and as a teacher.
My recent experience as a Fulbright Scholar to Poland during the Spring 2013 allowed me the opportunity
to teach at a European university and the chance to extensively travel throughout Europe. Indeed, travel
has been a particular passion for nearly twenty years (since 2009, for example, I have visited England,
Italy, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Austria).
Through travel I have become a better professor of art history—teaching the Pantheon is made more
person having it visited it on five different trips to Rome—but it has also made me a better local citizen,
too.
I hope one example will suffice. In 2010 I spent 32 days travelling around Poland as part of a Group Study
Exchange through the Iowa Rotary. Subsequent to my return I was asked to give a lecture to the National
Honor Society induction ceremony at Manchester High School. In that talk I provided several secrets to
soon -to -graduate high school seniors. One was, "Get out of Iowa: You will appreciate home all the more
when you return." I believe diversity experiences make us better, and I equally believe that forging
relationships that brings diversity to Dubuque—diversity in language, culture, religious views—makes our
community better, too. I would be honored to be able to contribute to this endeavor.
What contributions can you make or state reason for applying?: During the Spring 2014 I was an eager
and enthusiastic participant in the Dubuque City Life program. While in this program I came to learn of the
Sister City Relationships Advisory Commission. I was immediately interested and discussed the
commission with Kevin S. Firnstahl (who presented to our group) and Sheila Castaneda, then a colleague
at Clarke University. My conversations with them reinforced my interest in this particular group. Beyond
having academic and personal interests in the area of cultural exchange, as a recently tenured member of
