The Rockdale, Iowa Catastrophes: _~: .~.~.. Nicholas Gonner me+iuviicd the Rockdale Catastrophe or'Flood in his 1889 book Luxenabur~ers zn the Neu ik~'orld. He 'wrote '"The small hamlet of Rockdale, located on the outskirts of Dubuque, {Iowa], had a small Luxembourger contingent that was deeply affected by a terrible calamity in 1876. On the night of July 4 of that centennial year a torrential downpour practically wiped the settlement from the face of the earth. Washed a~~~ay were 40 persons; including 10 Luxembourgers and 17 persons from the Eifel region. Many of the survivors miraculously escaped death." (For the record, there were precisely 39 victims.) I knew Catfish Creek overflowed its banks at Rockdale, but never heard of the Luxembourgers. My family lived in the mid-1950s at Rockdale, which was settled and named by lead miners and farmers from Yorkshire, England. Recently, I asked my mother if the neighbors ever spoke of the flood. "No, they didn't" she said. "They might have talked about it down at the tavern, but I never went down to the tavern." A few years ago while editing a book on Table Mound Township in Dubuque County, Iowa (where Rockdale is located), the topic of the 1876 flood came to my attention. While checking sources, I found a survivor with my last name, but closer research revealed the surname was actually "Kapp" instead of "Rapp." This error in the English-language historical sources was typical. For instance, the exact number of victims was wrongly reported and the error repeated in the following years. (In 2006, a local newspaper did not list the right number of victims or the Luxembourg connection.) I scrutinized the 1876 English-language newspapers in Dubuque. The Dubuque Daily Times contained numerous mistakes in the spellings of names and other details about the flood. This is, in part, due to the confusion of survivors and destruction of the village. Drowned and recovered bodies required a speedy burial. Graves were dug in four local cemeteries. Hastily written reports were natural. The Dubuque Daily Herald account had been cut from the original newspaper before it was microfilmed. The DubuqueCounryHistory of 1880 correctly listed the total dead as 39, but had several mistakes. The Chicago Tribune received reports by telegraph that included the correct number of dead and the families' names. Out of frustration, I turned to Die Luxemburger Gazette and found a wealth of accurate information about the victims. Of the 39 victims, the following had Luxembourg roots. - Joseph Becker, Ellen Johnston Becker, and children, Ellen, Henry. -Peter Becker (widower) and children Henry, Marie, Albert, Frank, Alice. -Peter Kapp, Katharina Homisch Kapp, and children Marie, Mathias, Theresia, Peter. -Jean/John Klassen, Margaretha Junck/Junk Klassen, and children Christoph, Elisabeth, Magdalena, Margaretha, Maria. Joseph Becker and Peter Becker (brothers) were from Kehlen, Canton Capellen, Luxembourg. Peter Kapp was from Ernzen, Kreis Bitburg (near Echternach). Katharina Homisch Kapp was from Itel, Kreis Bitburg (near Echternach). Jean/John I{lassen was from Irel, Kreis Bitburg. Margaretha Junck/Junk Klassen was from Mamer, Canton Capellen, Luxembourg. The Kapp and Klassen families came to America in 1853 or 1854. The Kapps were members of Saint Mary's Church (or German Catholic Church) in Dubuque. Some of the victims do not have markers on their graves. An effort is underway to place a memorial plaque or monument at the Rockdale bridge to honor the flood's victims and their Luxembourg heritage. During the time I worked at the firm I also attended NICC where I graduated with a two year degree in paralegal studies; Loras College where I graduate ith a Bachelors' Degree in Political Science; and the University of Iowa, College of Law, where I graduated with a law degree. During those years, I gained experience in juggling a career, college classes and a family. I was also actively involved in many extra curricular activities, including, but not limited to the following: 1vICC: served on the Committee to Plan the Tom Reilly Memorial; Loras College: Mock trial program; and the University of Iowa: Student Editor for Journal of Corporation Law. I am currently involved as a member of the Dubuque County Bar Association and Young Lawyers of Dubuque. I am currently serving on a planning committee of the Dubuque County Bar Association for the summer picnic. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING: I was born, raised and educated in Dubuque and I have witnessed and benefitted from the progression of Dubuque's economic development. My first and last year of law school I continued to work in Dubuque and commuted to Iowa City. I spent 12 years of my professional career working in the downtown Main Street area where a lot of the forward progression has taken place. Dubuque is located in a unique and beautiful setting and I am excited to be part of the celebration of our City's great past, present and future. I want this opportunity to serve on the committee to give back to Dubuque for all that I have gained from living here. I understand the importance of team work and I know that the task of beautifying Dubuque and making it a better place to live and work came to fruition because of many dedicated and hard working individuals working together, and not any one individual acting alone. Additionally, I have analytical, organizational and networking skills that would make me the best candidate from the pool of young professionals to serve on this committee. NAME: Angela C. I plan on doing a collection of paintings of my favorite scenes for the occasion. I have lead a very productive life of creativity and enterprise. Two of my most popular prints are displayed in the Grand River Center Collection. I know a little something about promotion, and 1've written two best-selling books on technology and art. I've been employed with the Dubuque Schools for the past 8 years and have won the NSPRA Award of Excellence for film making and, this past year, I won the national Beacon Award for Excellence in Series Television from the Cable Industry Public Affairs Association for Kids in the Kitchen, a TV series 1 created and developed. I will endeavor to make up for any shortcomings I may have with boundless enthusiasm. I attended the University of Dubuque (BA), teach courses at Clarke College, and 1 don't sleep much. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING: I designed the Rotary Club's Welcome Sign and all signs that will serve as entrances to the city, the Wayfinding signs, and 1 was part of the delegation that garnered the All America City designation for Dubuque this June. Page 1 of 1 Kevin Firnstahl - 175th Anniversary Celebration Committee Application From: "Sue Hess" <shess@hammerlawoffices.com> To: <kfirnsta@cityofdubuque.org> Date: 6/20/2007 4:21 PM Subject: 175th Anniversary Celebration Committee Application Kevin: I was unable to attend the city council meeting on June 18th when council members addressed applicants. I am submitting this in addition to my written application. I am a member of the young professionals organization and I wish to be considered for one of the two positions open in that category. I believe that I am a strong applicant for this position because I have experience in planning events and networking with others. If any of the council members have questions with respect to my application, they can a-mail me at shessr~hammerlawoffices.com or call me at 563-583-4010. Thank you for you consideration. Susan M.
