RE: State Recreational Trails Grant for Heritage Trail Bridge Replacement Project
Dear Brian:
On behalf of the City of Dubuque, I am pleased to provide this letter of support for your
grant application to the Iowa Department of Transportation's State Recreational Trails
Program for the Heritage Trail Bridge Replacement Project.
The Dubuque County Heritage Trail offers a safe and accessible route through
picturesque open space corridors, with scenic views of woodlands, farmland and
limestone bluffs. It provides links to open space amenities along its 26-mile length and
at its termini. It is a valuable recreational and tourism resource for the tri-state area. Re-
establishing its continuity with the Heritage Trail Bridge Replacement Project is vital.
The 2002 City of Dubuque Comprehensive Plan contains goals and objectives for
maintaining existing bike/hike trails and creating a comprehensive bicycle and
pedestrian network throughout the community. The Dubuque County Heritage Trail is
an important connection for the City to accomplish these goals and objectives.
1 serve as Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Dubuque
Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (DMATS). The Dubuque County Heritage Trail
is included in 2025 DMATS Long Range Transportation Plan. The DMATS Plan calls for
hiking and biking trails for recreational purposes and as alternative modes of
transportation that will help reduce pollution and highway congestion. The Heritage Trail
Bridge Replacement Project will help to achieve these goals.
Sincerely,
7
