SUBJECT: Wireless Network
Fire Chief Dan Brown is recommending City Council approval of a contract with Racom
for the installation of 16 wireless network sites that will be connected to the fiber optic

across the City with a 1 Megabit bandwidth which will provide sufficient speed for data
for the Fire Department Mobile Digital Terminal application. The total project is

MEMORANDUM
August 13, 2007
TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
FROM: E. Daniel Brown, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: Wireless Network
The next component of the Mobile Data Network is the implementation of wireless
network sites and connectivity to the City's network. The Racom Corporation is
proposing 16 sites that will be connected to the fiber optic network that is city owned or
controlled for back haul into the city's computer network. The proposed cost is
$375,409.30 for equipment and installation.
The total project is budgeted at $536,500 with $429,200 from the Assistance to
Firefighter Grant. There is a December 5, 2007 deadline for this grant and the money
must be spent by then. The mobile data terminals have been ordered and that cost for
14 units is $84,713.05. With the expenditure of $375,409.30 and the $84,713.05 will
leave $76,377.65 for software, spare MDT and mounting brackets.
I am recommending to contract with Racom for the installation of the 16 sites. These 16
sites will provide the coverage across the city with a 1 Megabit bandwidth which will
provide sufficient speed for data for the Fire Department application.
I respectfully request that this be placed on the next City Council agenda for Mayor and
City Council approval.
