Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of October 20, 2014
Present: Mike Willis, President; Dan Boice, Secretary; Trustees, Paula Connors,
Patty Poggemiller, and Jon Trotter
Excused: John Anderson-Bricker and Jenny Weiss
• At the end of the first quarter of FY 15, 22 percent of the budget has been
expended and revenue collected was at 24 percent of projections.
• The CIP budget hearing was held Monday, October 20. Library requests
this year include replacement of the main entrance doors, a generator,
and a switch, which will increase the speed of the network and Internet
access.
• Improvement package requests this year include;
o Epoxy coating for the chiller to extend its life
o $5,000 e-book funding
o Computer workstations, iPad, and early literacy station to be added
to the equipment replacement schedule
o Polishing of the first and second floor marble
o Funding for summer hours on Sundays — (direct patron requests)
o $3,000 for author visits — Adult Services
• Library use decreased in September compared to the same time last year
• Circulation of digital material continues to grow, increasing 20 percent
compared to last year, and downloadable content now equals about 7
percent of all circulations.
• The Library Board and Administration continue to review solutions to
address staffing shortages, including a reduction in hours. On November 1
the library will be short 109 hours a week, all of which are 100 percent
public hours. We have received approval to hire for 20 of these hours.
The City Manager will be reviewing the hiring freeze in general around
mid-November. We will revisit the issue at that time. Public service is
maintained by on-call staff and the Director working public service desks,
both of which are difficult to maintain for much longer.
• The Board reviewed the summary from their strategic planning meeting on
September 27. The summary covered four areas: expansion of services
to the west side of Dubuque, strengthening the library's financial base,
strengthening current partnerships and identifying new partnerships, and
strengthening the library's marketing efforts. The Planning Committee will
meet to begin a draft of the strategic plan.
