ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMISSION
REGULAR SESSION
Tuesday, July 30, 2007, 4:00 p.m.

Meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. following staff assurance of
compliance with the Iowa Open Meeting Law.
Commissioners present: Sue Riedel, Louise Kames, Amy Weber, Geri Shafer,
Paul Kohl, Ellen Henkels, Paul Hemmer
Staff Present: Jerelyn O’Connor
Approval of Minutes of June 26 and July 5, 2007.
Motion by Weber to approve minutes as corrected, second by Shafer. Motion
passed 7-0.
New Business
Welcome New Commissioner
Sue extended a welcome to the newly appointed commissioner, Paul Hemmer.
Paul said he is honored and delighted to be here and also thanked the
Commission for past support for the production of Joe Sent Me.
Election of Officers
Ellen Henkels nominated Amy Weber as Chair. Second by Geri Shafer. Motion
passed 7-0.
Sue Riedel nominated Louise Kames as Vice-Chair. Second by Geri Shafer.
Motion passed 7-0.
Riedel nominated Paul Kohl as secretary. Second by Paul Hemmer. All
approved.
Review of 2007 Art on the River Jury Selections
O’Connor presented visual show of all of the sculpture submissions and indicated
the seven sculptures selected by the jury. The jury consisted of Geri Shafer,
Tom Jewell-Vitale, and David Wells. The jurors toured the potential site locations
for the sculptures and selected seven sculptures for the 2007 display. Geri
Shafer suggested that if commissioners had concerns about any of the
selections, those concerns should be referred back to the jury for consideration.
After discussion, motion by Sue Riedel to concur with the jury’s
recommendations. Second by Weber. Motion passed unanimously. Sculpture
selections will be forwarded to City Council for final concurrence at August 6
meeting.

40 Anniversary of the Iowa Arts Council
O’Connor shared correspondence from the Iowa Arts Council about the

opportunity to host a local 40 Anniversary Celebration of Iowa providing funding
for the arts. There was a suggestion of holding this celebration in conjunction
with the Voices Exhibit this fall. Ellen Henkels volunteered to contact Voices
curator Gene Tully to explore this possibility.
Old Business
August Brainstorming Session
Commission agreed to meet at 4:00 p.m. on August 28 for an information
brainstorming/goal setting session. Amy Weber suggested that the commission
could review information from the last goal setting session and discuss plans and
strategies for the upcoming year.

Commission agreed to change regular meeting to 4:00 p.m. on the 4 Tuesday
of the month.
Motion by Louise Kames, Second by Amy Weber to adjourn. All approved.
Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
