Library Board of Trustees Update

Present: Alan Avery, President; Sue Lindsay, Vice President; Kristen Smith, Secretary;

Eight percent of the fiscal year has passed with 7 percent of the budget expended.
Revenue is at 6.5 percent of projected income for FY 08.

Circulation of materials is up 5 percent over this time last year. A record was
reached in July with a daily average of 2,277 circulations. Adult references
questions were up 4 percent which has not been seen in a very long time. Visits
were up 4 percent over this time last year and Internet use was up 26 percent over
this time last year.

Staff Development Day was held on August 16. The presentation with the highest
rating was given by Jim Ott on the topic of poverty. He discussed that poverty is
a distinct culture with its own norms and mores and the importance of reaching
out to people in poverty through building relationships. 26 of 27 evaluations rated
Ott’s presentation as excellent or very good. Some comments from staff include:
“This was one of the best sessions I’ve been involved in. The information
provided on poverty and understanding the differences has been enlightening and
closely related to many of the public we serve.” and “Wow! Speechless –
brought to tears. I will forever evaluate how I treat people who are living in
poverty. I hope discussion with Jim continues because he had so many wonderful
ideas.”

The art audit evaluating paintings, prints, and etchings has been completed and is
estimated to be valued at $89,000. (This does not include works that had been
previously valued.) The next phase of the audit will include a valuation of the
brass figures and artwork followed by a valuation of antique furniture.

The Public Campaign for the Library’s renovation is scheduled for Saturday,

October 20 from 10:00 – 1:00 p.m. This coincides with the Library’s 105
Anniversary.

The Board discussed ideas presented by some Campaign Cabinet members
regarding features of the renovation that will involve historical renovation.
President Avery appointed Diann Guns, Beverly Kolz, and Michael Shubatt as a
committee to meet with cabinet members to further explore the ideas.
