ITEM TITLE: National Arts Advocacy Day (March 23, 2015) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type ❑ National Arts Advocacy Day Supporting Documentation DUB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: March 23, 2015, is being recognized as National Arts Advocacy Day by thousands of arts and cultural organizations, communities, and states across the country; and WHEREAS, the arts enrich and transform lives in our community, playing an unique and intrinsically valuable role in our civic lives by inspiring our minds, feeding our souls, promoting conversation and action, and encouraging innovation which drives the economy and sustains our prosperity; and WHEREAS, the arts have a profound positive influence on the education of the children in our community by fostering discipline, creativity, imagination, self-expression, and problem- solving skills, while also helping to develop a heightened appreciation of beauty and cross cultural understanding; and WHEREAS, the arts are a business magnet for our community, stimulating business activity, attracting companies that want to offer employees and clients a creative climate and a community with high amenity value; and WHEREAS, the arts attract tourism revenue for our community with cultural travelers who often stay longer and spend more, thereby helping local businesses thrive. WHEREAS, the arts help our community prosper in a diversified 21 st-century economy with nonprofit arts organizations, along with creative enterprises, contributing to state and local economies, generating $47.2 million in annual economic activity and $36.7 million in household income to local residents (according to the Arts & Economic Prosperity IV national economic impact study conducted by Americans for the Arts). NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 23RD OF MARCH, 2015 AS "NATIONAL ARTS ADVOCACY DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
