ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMISSION
SPECIAL SESSION
Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 3.30 p.m.
Board Room, Carnegie Stout Public Library
360 W. 11th Street, Dubuque, Iowa
Meeting was called to order at 3.40 p.m. following staff assurance of
compliance with the Iowa Open Meeting Law.
Commissioners present: Sue Riedel, Louise Kames, Amy Weber, Geri Shafer,
Paul Kohl, Ellen Henkels, Paul Hemmer
Staff Present: Jerelyn O'Connor, Liz Willems
Approval of Minutes of July 30, 2007.
Motion by Hemmer to approve minutes, second by Riedel. Motion passed 7-0.
NEW BUISNESS:
1. Planning Session -
- Review Accomplishments -Utilizing the August 2006 Strategic
plan as a basis, Chairperson Amy Weber reviewed
accomplishments of commission over the last year.
Priority: Funding for the Arts:
Action Steps:
1. Develop Case Statement on need for increased arts funding.
Gather information from other successful cities. Sue Riedel
mentioned that the Iowa Arts Council is now collecting data on local
government arts funding.
There was discussion about pursuing funding from other sources.
Information is available through Americans for the Arts. There's a
need for additional private funding and increased partnerships.
Commission discussed other needs for arts organizations, such as
grant writing assistance, information on grant programs. There was
discussion about the resources now available through the
Community Foundation.
Commission discussed having talk sessions with arts organizations
to get feedback on the City's grant programs and suggestions on
other needs.
Information was provided to the Commission on research Geri
Shafer conducted on the economic impact of the arts organizations
that are funded through the operating support program.
There was also discussion on Arts and Culture month, city council
proclamation, and presenting report to the City Council in October.
Art on the River
Sculptures will be installed in the Port of Dubuque between September 10tn_14cn
O'Connor presented idea of having the opening event for Art on the River during
the first week of October as an "after work" reception. There was general
consensus on proceeding with this.
Motion to adjourn by Paul Hemmer, Second by Ellen Henkels. All approved.
