WHEREAS, May is "Older Americans Month", which recognizes older Americans for their
contributions to the nation, to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their
health, getting engaged in their communities and making a positive impact on their lives
and in the lives of others: and
WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 50t" anniversary of the Older Americans Act signed into law by
President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, which put a focus on the needs of older Americans
and provided a nationwide network to help older adults live with dignity in the
communities of their choice for as long as possible, and provided home-delivered and
congregate meals, caregiver support, preventive health services, personal care,
transportation, job training and elder abuse education and prevention; and
WHEREAS, the theme of this year's Older Americans Month is "Get Into the Act", encouraging older
Americans to get and stay involved in their communities, engage in preserving and
enhancing their own personal quality of life and that of others and reminding the
community of the importance of supporting senior citizens and providing for their needs;
and
WHEREAS, DuRide is anon-profit organization that provides over 1,000 rides a month for seniors
65 and older who no longer drive, by matching volunteer drivers using their own
vehicles with needed rides. DuRide has provided over 50,000 rides since 2008 and now
serves over 250 seniors.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF
THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE
MONTH OF MAY 2015 AS
DuRIDE IN SERVICE TO OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 4th day of May, 2015.
