Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of October 22, 2015
Present: Jenny Weiss President; Angela Allred, Secretary; Paula Connors, Pat
Maddux, Patty Poggemiller, Jon Trotter, and Mike Willis
• September marked the close of the first quarter of the fiscal year.
Expenditures were at 23% and revenue collected is at 21 .6% of
projections.
• A review of use during the first quarter of fiscal year 2016 demonstrates
the changing way people are using the library, which is more patron-
controlled. Although books remain the top items checked out, digital audio
and a-Books have increased in use 30% compared to the same time last
year. The number of items checked out using a self-check machine has
increased 44% compared to the same time last year. Text messaging as
the chosen method to be reminded of library items on hold or coming due
has increased 160%.
• McCullough Creative met with the Library Director to discuss social media
before the creation of a marketing plan, which is expected in November.
• The Board approved the operating budget requests for FY 2017, including
10 improvement package requests.
• The Board discussed the proposed ordinance change Chapter 7, 2-7-4.
This section did not exist in previous ordinances and introduces a gray
area regarding policy-making. Henricks will collect ordinances from the
nine larger libraries in Iowa and ask the directors of the same how the
matter is approached in their communities.
• The Board reviewed the Maker Space Cost Opinion Summary created by
Selser Schaefer Architects. The total project is $138,125. Discussion was
held regarding grant availability for the project and level of support from
the Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library. The cost opinion
was brief leaving several questions such as whether cabling for Internet
access was included in the estimate. The Board tabled the discussion until
the estimate was expanded upon and will review it at their November
meeting.
