ITEM TITLE: Autism Awareness Month (April 2016) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Autism Awareness Month Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF L 0 DUBBf&E Masterpiece on the Mississippi P-11DX0CLAMAT10N WHEREAS, autism is a pervasive developmental disorder affecting the social, communication and behavioral skills of those affected by it, and WHEREAS, as more health professionals became proficient in diagnosing autism, more children are being diagnosed on the autism spectrum, resulting in rates as high as 1 in 68 children nationally, and WHEREAS, while there is no cure for autism, it is well documented that if individuals with autism receive treatment early in their lives, it often is possible for those individuals to lead significantly improved lives, and WHEREAS, individuals with autism often require a lifetime of specialized and community support services to ensure their health and safety and to support families' resilience as they manage the psychological and financial burdens autism presents; and WHEREAS, an awareness effort is underway to educate parents, professionals and the general public about autism and its effects. NOW THEREFORE, I, RIC W. JONES, MAYOR PRO-TEM, OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2016 AS: AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND URGE ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES, IN ORDER TO BECOME BETTER EDUCATED ON THE SUBJECT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.
