The Qty of Dubuque is pleased N endorse the efforts of Heritage Works N produce a public
celebration for and academic symposium about Alfred Caldwell's work at Eagle Point Park.
Since 1909, Eagle Point Park has been the crown jewel of the Dubuque Parks system. Its
architectural and community significance are undeniable. The park holds personal
significance and memories for many of our citizens, yet few realize the nationallevelhistoric
and architectural significance of Alfred Caldwell's WPA Era work at Eagle Point Park. This
event and symposium would further educate our citizens about the park that has played such
a large role in their personal histories, while drawing attention from regional and national
experts in preservation and landscape architecture.
The timing of Nese events could not be better, as the Qty of Dubuque has been working to
prepare a nomination for the parkto be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The
city also recognizes that as the park continues to age, significant maintenance and
restoration will be required. Underthe currentfiscal climate, finding sufficient funds for this
work will be challenging. The efforts of Heritage Works will lay the groundwork for future
fundraising effortsfrom the community.
Though Heritage Works is a young organization in our community, it has already shown itself
N bean invaluable partner in neighborhood revitalization and historic preservation. The Qty
of Dubuque is pleased to endorse Heritage Works proposal for an academic symposium and
public celebration centered around Alfred Caldwell's work at Eagle Point Park.
