WHEREAS, May is "Older Americans Month", which recognizes older Americans for their
contributions to the nation, to focus on how older adults are taking charge of
their health, getting engaged in their communities and making a positive impact
on their lives and in the lives of others: and
WHEREAS, President Obama recently signed legislation extending the Older Americans Act,
first enacted in 1965. The act focuses on the needs of older Americans and
provides a nationwide network to help older adults live with dignity in the
communities of their choice. Further, it provides for home-delivered and
congregate meals, caregiver support, preventive health services, personal care,
transportation, job training and elder abuse education and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Older American Month encourages older Americans to get and stay involved in
their communities, engage in preserving and enhancing their own personal
quality of life and that of others and reminds everyone of the importance of
supporting senior citizens and recognizing and providing for their unique needs;
and
WHEREAS, DuRide is a local non-profit organization that provides rides for their members
age 65 and older who cannot drive themselves by coordinating 170 volunteer
drivers, who use their own vehicles with requested rides. DuRide has provided
nearly 70,000 rides since 2008 and now serves a record 270 members in
Dubuque, Asbury and East Dubuque.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BOOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF
THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE
MONTH OF MAY 2016 AS
"DuRIDE IN SERVICE TO OLDER AMERICANS MONTH"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 16th day of May, 2016
