MAIN STREET
The CARADCC Building &Millwork District Complete Streets Public Private Partnership won the
30-year INNOVATION AWARD for demonstrating innovative property development and Main
Street district revitalization strategies as Main Street Iowa celebrated 30 years of commitment to
downtown and commercial district revitalization during an awards celebration held Friday,April
29, 2016, in downtown Des Moines.
The CARADCC Building, combined with the infrastructure and streetscape provided through a
$5.6 million Federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant are
the catalyst for the renaissance of the Historic Millwork District (HMD) in Dubuque. The HMDwas
once the nation's largest window and door manufacturing district, home to the "lost arts"of
millwork and metalwork. Gronen Properties worked with the City of Dubuque and other local
partners tojumpstart and execute a bold preservation-based plan.
John Butler was recognized as an INSPIRATIONAL LEADER who has made significant contributions
to the local MainStreet Program's downtown revitalization mission since the programs'
designation.
Butler, downtown development and preservation leader locally and nationally, transformed an
insurance agency into a renowned nationwide reinsurance company. He not only completed
one, but two top-tier historic preservation projects enabling his company's expansion. Dramatic
facade and interior restorations that give pause and received national recognition.John did not
allow costly complications to delay or lessen his projects. He even provided infrastructure so the
Town Clock could return to its home structure.Additionally,John led the City in restoring Main
Street Tom dead-end plaza to impressive streetscape and insists Dubuque's historic public
buildings are restored equally well.
The honors were presented by Governor Terry E. Branstad and Debi Durham, director of the Iowa
Economic Development Authority (IEDA).
