He is the co-author of the Iowa Motor Vehicle Desk Handbook. Sheldon Kurtz David H. Vernon Professor of Law One of Iowa Law's most beloved professors, Kurtz joined the Iowa Law faculty in 1973. For over 40 years, he has excelled in the classroom, in his scholarship and his service. He focuses his teaching, scholarship and service on property law, trusts and —� estates, and health law and has educated thousands of Iowa Law students in those areas. Vestal Chair and Associate Dean for Research Emeritus \ Bonfield joined Iowa Law in 1962 and taught generations of law students Administrative and Constitutional Law until his retirement in January 2016. His service as a full- time professor at Iowa Law is longer than any other faculty member in the history of the school. In addition to his teaching and scholarship, his service contributions have been equally outstanding. He was the principal draftsman of the Iowa Civil Rights Acts of 1965, 1966, and 1979; the Iowa Administrative Procedure Act of 1974 and major amendments to that Act in 1998; the Iowa Open Meetings Law of 1978; major amendments to the Iowa Public Records Law in 1984 and 2011 and the 2012 Act establishing the Iowa Public Information Board. Bonfield received many awards for his work as a professor, scholar, and law reformer. Because the Dean and faculty of the Law School knew he was a bibliophile and avid collector of books, in 1986 they convinced him to assume the position of Associate Dean in charge of the Law Library with a mission to make it one of the best law school libraries in the country. When he retired as Associate Dean in 2015 he had accomplished that result. At that time, among all law school libraries in the United States, the Iowa Law School Library had the second largest number of separately cataloged individual titles in all formats in its collection and the second largest number of hardcopy and microform volumes and volume equivalents in its collection. http://Iaw.uiowa.edu/150-people 02/26/2016 150 People College of Law Page 4 of 105 THE LIN VERSITY OF IOWA The Honorable Thad Collins, Class of 1990 Coralville, Iowa Collins clerked for Judge Michael Melloy in the bankruptcy courts and district court; he also clerked for Judge David R. Hansen in the U.S. Court of Appeals 8th Circuit. After his clerkships he moved to Minneapolis with his wife, Jeannie, where she practiced dentistry and he worked for the firm now 1 INS known as Stinson Leonard and Street LLP. Collins returned to Iowa and in 2010 he was appointed Chief Federal Bankruptcy Judge of the Northern District of Iowa. Collins has achieved many notable accomplishments in his career but what makes him stand out is his charisma, large heart and undying loyalty. He is an outstanding person and a friend to anyone who crosses his path. Robert W. (Bob) Lundy, Class of 1951 (1926-2015) After serving in the U.S. Army and achieving the rank of staff L ' Pesergeant, Lundy attended the University of Iowa. Upon graduating from law school he joined the Statute � Revision Councils' effort to rewrite and codify Oregons' statute laws (first rewrite in 94 years) and continued to work on what became Oregon Revised Statutes w (1953 Edition). The Honorable Chris Hagenow, Class of 1997 Windsor Heights, Iowa Hagenow is Majority Leader of the House of Representatives of the Iowa General Assembly. In this capacity he has a major impact on law and public policy in Iowa. Hagenow was first elected in 2008 and is currently serving his fourth term representing House District 43. Previously he served as the Chairman as the House Government Oversight Committee and served three years as the Majority Whip before A, being elected Majority Leader in 2015. Hagenow is a founding partner of the Des Moines law firm Whitaker, Hagenow & Gustoff, LLP. The Honorable Celeste Bremer, Class of 1977 Des Moines, Iowa 1 Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Bremer was Pe appointed to serve the U.S. District Court for the Southern ` District of Iowa in �R 1985. She shines a light on the process and results, and asks "where are the females?" at every step along the way. She received her doctorate from Drake University School of Education in 2002; her dissertation was on judicial occupational stress. The Honorable Kevin G. Ross, Class of M1` 1994 Saint Paul, Minnesota Judge Ross served as an Iowa City police officer for five years, before he left the force to enroll in Iowa Law. Annette Brown, Class of 2000 Gilbert, Arizona Brown, a member of the Navajo Nation, is the Assistant Director for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Department of Health & Human Services for the past four years with oversight of the Health Services Division. She began working for the SRPMIC in 2008 as an Assistant General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel. Prior to working for the SRPMIC, Brown served as legal counsel for the Colorado River Indian Tribes ,i , and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. She embraced her passion for helping others and joined the Des Moines law firm of Babich Goldman, P.C., where she specializes in representing plaintiffs in employment and civil rights cases. In the past year, Shanahan-Fricke has already begun making an impact on her clients' lives, working diligently as their zealous advocate. She also teaches a constitutional law course focusing on the rights of the traditionally disadvantaged at Grinnell College. He came to Iowa Law after the Army and after starting Swisher Farm Supply. Following law school, he became a banker, not a lawyer, owning banks around Iowa. He recently published a book about his life, The Advantage of Being Born Poor. He and his family have been generous supporters of the University of Iowa and Iowa Law over the years. Allen E. Brennecke, Class of 1961 Marshalltown, Iowa Brennecke had an outstanding legal career with the firm of Moore, McKibben, Goodman & Lorenz, la LLP and continues as "Of Counsel" with that firm. His dedication to the profession of law is best demonstrated by his extensive involvement in the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Brennecke was first involved with the Young Lawyers Section of the ISBA, and served as President of that Section in 1970-1971. Next he became very active in the ABA and served on the Board of Governors of that organization from 1982 through 1986. In 1984 through 1986 he was the Chair of the ABA House of Delegates. Berenstein, Class of 1961 Sioux City, Iowa Berenstein is a senior partner of Berenstein, Moore, Heffernan, Moeller, & Johnson, L.L.P. Prior to joining the law firm in 1963, he served on the Iowa Attorney General's staff, and was Special Assistant Attorney General in 1962. Berenstein has a personal commitment to community service, as well as the state of Iowa and The Iowa State Bar Association OSBA). Wilson, Class of 1942 (1913-1982) Wilson practiced law for one month following graduation from ' Iowa Law. He was then drafted for the army and served three years in North Africa and Europe. Following his return to the United States, Wilson continued law with his uncle, Gilbert Mote, in Marshalltown, Iowa until his death. During his career, his law office grew from two attorneys to seven attorneys. He spoke for the ISBA for many years and was an encouraging leader in the law community. His career was viewed by many as a very successful law practice. Annie Nowlin Savery, Class of 1875 (1831-1891) Savery was well known for her involvement in the women's suffrage movement in Iowa. She was a founding officer (corresponding secretary) in the state suffrage organization and helped establish the first woman suffrage society in Polk County in 1870. She served on the executive committee of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) during the 1870s before F;(5 A"MA M.s..ve,. - becoming one of the second female graduates at Iowa (there were two in the Class of 1875). Richard Albrecht, Class of 1961 Bainbridge Island, Washington Albrecht is currently Of Counsel at the Seattle office of the Perkins Cole law firm, which he joined immediately after law school and became a partner. He then served as a U.S. Supreme Court clerk for Justice Wiley B. Rutledge, a former Dean of Iowa Law. He went into private practice in Washington D.C. before joining the Chicago law firm now known as Jenner & Block. During his career at Jenner, he was Special Counsel to the National Committee on the Causes and Prevention of Violence and served on the U.S. Senate Subcommittee investigating individuals representing interests of foreign governments. He also served as Chairman of the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Commission. Elizabeth (Bess) M. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Sheldon in Boston, Massachusetts in 1941 and they moved to Iowa City in 1948. He was Professor of Law at Iowa Law for forty years until his retirement in 1988. His work focused on admiralty, criminal k\M*E law, jurisprudence, and land use planning. Throughout his career, he also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota; along with teaching in Peru, France and England. He also served as a legal advisor to the Peruvian government. Patrick Madigan, Class of 1998 West Des Moines, Iowa Patrick Madigan is an Iowa Assistant Attorney General and in this position he played a key role in working to put an end to mortgage foreclosure abuse and fraud by leading the national state attorneys s general mortgage group for the last 10 years. Most notably, Madigan helped lead an 18-month investigation of, and negotiation with, the nation's five largest mortgage servicers. Vernon, Dean Emeritus (1925 to 2001) Vernon held degrees from Harvard University and New York University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. After time as a member of the faculty at New York University Law School and University of Houston Law School, University of New Mexico Law School, and the University of Washington College of Law, he came to Iowa Law in 1966. Her grandfather, Samuel Howard Rudolph, Sr. was a member of the Class of 1897. Her mother, Elizabeth Rudolph, was a member of the Class of 1926. Her uncle, Samuel Howard Rudolph II, was a member of the Class of 1935 and was Research Assistant. Between appliance assignments, he was the CEO of Breakthrough, an Iowa City start-up software and consulting company engaged in developing effective early literacy programs for school systems. Garman, Class of 1968 Danville, Illinois Justice Garman was one of only five women in her Iowa Law class. After law school, she returned to Illinois, first working as an attorney with the Vermilion County Legal Aid Society, then serving four years as an Assistant Illinois State's Attorney. She worked in private practice with Sebat, Swanson, Banks, Lessen & Garman until she was appointed to the Illinois bench in 1973. Willard Boyd Rawlings-Miller Professor of Law and UI President Emeritus Iowa City, Iowa Boyd became a professor of law at Iowa in 1954, serving on the faculty until 1964, at which time he was named vice president for academic affairs. He then became president of the University of Iowa in 1969--one of the youngest presidents at age 42. As president of the university, Boyd supported increased funding for the institution, including higher faculty salaries. During the student unrest of the early 1970s, Boyd was credited with maintaining dialogue between the administration and student leaders. McClain began practicing law in 1877, continuing until 1887 when he became Vice-Chancellor of the Law Department at the State University of Iowa. In 1890 he was made Chancellor, serving until 1900 when he received the nomination for Judge of the Iowa Supreme Court. After his retirement from the court he moved to California to teach law at Leland Stanford Jr. University. In 1914 he returned to Iowa City to serve again as dean of the State University's Law Department. McClain was a prolific law writer, contributing to many law journals and authoring numerous legal textbooks. He was the compiler and editor of the code of Iowa published in 1880 known as McClain's Annotated Code and Statutes of the State of Iowa. John Bouma, Class of 1960 Phoenix, Arizona After joining Snell & Wilmer L.L.P. in 1962, Bouma advanced through the firm to become its chairman in 1983, a F � position he held until December 2014. He has generously volunteered his time to Iowa Law serving as a member of the Iowa Law School Foundation. He is dedicated - to Iowa Law, as well as the entire University of Iowa, which includes funding the Charles M. and Marion J. Kierscht Law Endowment Fund, providing faculty support, merit scholarships, and resources for the Iowa Law Library. He was a h long-time member of the Iowa Law School Foundation board; serving as President from 2010- 2014 and chair of the Iowa Law School Endowment Campaign for the 21st Century campaign. Carroll Reasoner, Class of 1976 Cedar Rapids, Iowa Reasoner was the first woman and youngest to serve as president of the Iowa State Bar Association. She was named the Vice President for Legal _ Affairs and General Counsel at the University of Iowa in 2008. Prior to accepting this appointment she was a senior vice president at the Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, P.L.C. law firm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Duane (Bud) Vieth, Class of 1949 Bethesda, Maryland Vieth was the ninth lawyer hired by Arnold, Fortas & Porter in Washington, D.C., which is now Arnold & Porter. He served as managing partner of the firm from 1965-1981 and as the firm's first chairman from 1981 to 1989. He was the lead donor in establishing the N. William Hines Professorship. Charlie Wittmack, Class of 2006 Des Moines, Iowa and Charlotte, North Carolina Wittmack is an internationally renowned adventurer and humanitarian. He also operates an adventure travel company called CK Wilder, which leads expeditions to seven continents. Alexander Clark, Jr., Class of 1879 • , (1856-1939) Clark was the first African-American to _ receive a law degree from The University of Iowa, which made him the first to receive a law degree from a college west of the Mississippi River. His father earned his law degree five years after him, making them the first African-American father and son to receive law degrees from the same institution. Akxa"w Clark, Jr. Dean S. In addition to authoring a leading casebook on evidence, he participated in the creation of the Model Code, Uniform Rules and Federal Rules of Evidence and was a major contributor as a published writer and speaker. Following his retirement from Iowa, he became the founding dean of the Florida State law school in 1966. His father, Justice Scott M. Ladd, was an Iowa law graduate in 1881 and served on the Iowa Supreme Court from 1897 to 1920, including four years as Chief Justice. Randall Bezanson, Class of 1971 (1946-2014) Bezanson began his legal career clerking first for the Honorable Roger Robb of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and then for the Honorable Harry A. Blackmun on the United States Supreme Court. He returned to Iowa Law in 1973 as a member of the Iowa Law faculty. He left Iowa to serve as Dean of Washington & Lee University School of Law from 1988-1994 and then returned to Iowain 1996 as a member of the law faculty until his death in 2014. The Honorable Mary Tabor, Class of 1991 Des Moines, Iowa Tabor was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 2010.
