INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to share about AmeriCorps Partners in Learning
member, Liz Griffin, receiving the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award recently. The
award will be presented at the Council meeting for local recognition of her efforts.
DISCUSSION
Liz Griffin served 4 terms with AmeriCorps Partners in Learning and was nominated for
the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award. Liz received the award from Governor Branstad
and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Liz served 3,350 hours in the
Dubuque community through AmeriCorps Partners in Learning. Specifically, she served
at Audubon Elementary for 3 school years and Carnegie-Stout Public Library for 2
summers. During Liz's time as an AmeriCorps member, Liz Griffin tutored 103 K-3rd
grade students at Audubon Elementary School in reading.
During the 2015-2016 school year, 100% of Liz's students improved their reading score
from Fall to Spring. Liz also built incredible relationships with students at Audubon
offering them another safe, caring adult in their life. If you go to Audubon, Liz knows
just about every student and every student knows Liz. Spending three years at
Audubon allowed Liz to build incredible rapport with the staff. Teachers, staff and
administration consider Liz an extraordinary asset to their team. In fact, they reached
out to Liz to consider a full time position at Audubon next school year.
At the Carnegie-Stout Public Library Liz too was seen as a tremendous asset. During
her time at the library, she organized, implemented and assisted several special
programs including the Lego club, Story Times, Summer Reading Program and
Fantastic Fridays. Liz also did incredible outreach during the summer on behalf of
AmeriCorps and Carnegie-Stout Public Library. Liz created story times and presented
them to child care facilities and special events all across Dubuque. During the 2015
summer, Liz reached over 1600 kids in our Dubuque community through her story
times. Carnegie-Stout Public Library has also reached out to Liz about employment
opportunities and Liz will be working part time for the library in 2016.
