HORGAN, DR. ROBERT

HORGAN, Dr. Robert J. Horgan,
Robert J. Ph.D., 92, of Midlothian,
passed away on August 24, 2016. He
was predeceased by his son, Gregory,
in 2014. He is survived by his loving
wife of 66 years, Patricia; sons, Mark
(Anita), Jeffrey (Amy); and
grandchildren, Brandon Talley,
Katherine Mulreany (James) and
Megan Horgan; sisters, Mary Horgan,
Maureen Kobelski (Paul) and Yolanda
McAllister. Dr. Horgan was a World
War II veteran serving in the 66th
Infantry Division in Europe. He
attended the University of North
Dakota, where he earned a B.A. and M.A., and met his wife. He received
his doctoral degree from the University of Notre Dame. The family
moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he taught at Clark College for 12 years
and served on city council for five years and two terms as mayor. In 1967
the family moved to Richmond, Va., where they joined St. Edward the
Confessor Catholic Church. The move began a 27-year career at the
Urban Center and the University of Richmond, where he taught state
and local government in the Political Science department. In 1974, he
and Patricia along with three other couples were founders of the New
Community School, a school for students with dyslexia. A memorial
service will be held on Tuesday, August 30, at St. Edward the Confessor
Catholic Church at 2700 Dolfield Dr., N. Chesterfield, Va. 23235. There
will be a reception starting at 10 a.m., and Mass to follow at 11 a.m. In
lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the New Community School
in his memory at 4211 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23227 or a charity
of your choice.
