WHEREAS, the issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples, and remains
humanity's guiding inspiration; In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed the
International Day of Peace be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the
ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples;" and
WHEREAS, the United Nations expanded the observance of the International Day of Peace in
2001 to include the call for a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and invited all
nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day of
Peace; and
WHEREAS, there is growing support within our nation for the observance of the International Day
of Peace, including a group of Dubuque-area residents inviting all to create a culture
of peace by participating in a city-wide celebration from Monday 12 September to
Monday 26 September, focusing on non-violent conflict resolution; and
WHEREAS, local and global violence impels all citizens to work toward converting humanity's
noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality. It is possible to see our
community and world turn from violent to nonviolent solutions within our lifetimes; and
WHEREAS, the Dubuque Day of Peace organizing the Committee's 2016 focus is on how women
are leading the way to resolve disputes nonviolently and to achieve understanding
and justice for everyone all around the world and right here in Dubuque with a
performance of Rohina Malik's "Unveiled" on Wednesday, September 21, at 7 p.m. at
Hoffmann Hall Theater at Loras College.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DO HEREBY
RECOGNIZE SEPTEMBER 13TH TO 25TH AS
"DAYS OF PEACE AND CEASEFIRE"
IN DUBUQUE, IOWA AND CALL UPON THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE TO FURTHER AFFIRM A
VISION OF OUR WORLD AT PEACE BY FOSTERING COOPERATION BETWEEN
INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND NATIONS.

In our seventh year, our 2016 focus is on how
women are leading the way to resolve disputes
nonviolently and to achieve understanding and
justice for everyone all around the world and right
here in Dubuque.

"Unveiled"
Wednesday, September 21,
7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Hoffmann Hall
Theater, Loras College
Racism. Hate crimes. Love. Islam. Culture.
Language. Life. Five Muslim women in a post -
9/11 world serve tea and uncover what lies
beneath the veil in this critically acclaimed
one -woman show. Malik returns to Dubuque
for a repeat performance of her insightful and
entertaining look inside the world of Muslim
women.
Rohina Malik was born and raised in
London, England. At the age of 15 she migrated to
Chicago with her family. During a playwrighting
and performance class in April 2008, she started
writing her much -acclaimed play "Unveiled': Since
then, "Unveiled" has been presented at theaters
in the United States, Canada and in the summer
of 2016, South Africa. Malik's performance will be
proceeded by Dubuque Chorale Children's Choir.

Saturday, Sept. 24,12-2pm,
Start at Loras College (outside Christ the King
Chapel), touch base at University of Dubuque
(outside Blades Chapel) and end at Clarke
University (outside Atrium). Cosponsored
with Iowa United Nations Association (IUNA).
All proceeds raised go to the U. N. High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which
helps provide refugees with life sustaining tools.
Suggested Donation: $20 adults; $10 students.

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2pm-6pm, Kehl Center,
Clarke University This community Barbeque is
an event where residents can bond and engage
with different cultures through free food catered
from a variety of local vendors. A live DJ will play
family -friendly music. Activities include milk bottle
knockdown, pop bottle ring toss, football tire toss,
small putting green, half court shot, and bean
bags. The Jule will be providing bus passes for day.
