Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting ofJuly 28, 2016
Present: Jenny Weiss President; Trustees, Robert Armstrong, Pat Maddux,
Christy Monk, Jon Trotter, and Mike Willis
Excused: Patty Poggemiller, Vice President
• Robert Armstrong and Christy Monk were sworn in as new Library Board
of Trustees members. Jenny Weiss was nominated as President; Patty
Poggemiller as Vice President, and Mike Willis as Secretary. Nominations
were accepted and approved. Weiss appointed Armstrong and
Poggemiller to the Relations Committee, Maddux and Monk to the
Operations Committee, and Trotter and Willis to the Planning Committee.
Weiss is a member of each of the committees and will also represent the
Board on the 28E Agency Library Group. Willis will represent the Board on
the Art Subcommittee, and Trotter and Weiss will represent the Board on
the Library Foundation.
• Fiscal Year 2016 closed on June 30. Revenue was at 98% of projections,
falling short $3,115. Taking this shortage into consideration in the overall
budget, as well as not considering the savings of$10,467 from the
Travel/Conferences budget, which was frozen in FY 2016, the library
came in under budget 2.1% or $68,710.
• The Board approved expenditures made in July to date.
• New hours took effect on Sunday, July 10 with 348 visitors. On Sunday,
July 17, 388 people visited the library. This average is between 87 and 97
people per hour, or an overall average of 92. Comparing this to four
Sundays in February this appears to be an increase. The four Sundays in
February averaged 82 visitors per hour.
• FY 2016 reflected an increase in the number of library visitors but a
decrease in materials checked out. Carnegie-Stout is not unique and most
public libraries nationwide are experiencing this; however, this and
collection development will be studied in FY 2017.
• Construction on the Maker Space officially began July 21 . A pre-
construction meeting was held with contractors on Monday, July 18 and
revealed concerns that may cause delay, such as the elm veneer to match
the existing Information Desk. Very little elm veneer will be left in the new
construction and using a different wood species with a stain to match as
an option was discussed. It was agreed that the project will be completed,
or substantially completed, in time for the ILA reception scheduled for
October 12. Bi-monthly construction meetings are scheduled.
• The Library Foundation discussed a mid-year campaign to raise the
$17,000 amount that was issued as a challenge by a donor who is willing
to contribute $50,000 if this happens. Diann Guns has resigned from the
Library Foundation. At the meeting held on July 20, Paula Connors
agreed to take over the role of President and lead the Foundation.
• McCullough Creative has nearly completed everything requested in the
marketing campaign. Radio ads and billboard ads will continue into early
next year. The recently completed content for print ads can be used for
advertising, and when Adult Services is fully staffed a social media plan
will be implemented.
• The lending library that has been at Hy-Vee since September, 2011 has
been removed at the request of the store manager. The Board discussed
alternatives for service delivery to the west side of town and options will be
discussed at the August meeting.
• Staffing update: Bill Carroll has been promoted to Adult Services
Manager filling a vacancy left by Andrew Fuerste-Henry who has moved to
St. Louis. Bill has been with the library for five years and has held the
position of Circulation Supervisor since 2013, holds a Master's Degree in
Public Administration and is currently enrolled in a Library and Information
Science program. Brent Stokesberry has accepted the position of
Circulation Supervisor and will start soon. Brent has a Master's in Library
Science and decades of experience in library management. Scott
Schlichte started work on July 11 as the Library's new Information
Technology Supervisor, filling a vacancy left by Jason Burds who
accepted a promotion to City Information Services. Hannah Peterson has
accepted an offer as part-time (25-hours) Library Aide in Youth Services.
She will fill a vacancy left when Amy Wilhelm resigned to move to a full-
time job. Adult Services Librarian Aisha Hallman resigned and moved out
of state. We are recruiting for this position now.
