Vehicle Damage
This is a claim in which the claimant states that her vehicle was damaged when she drove
over a manhole missing the cover at the intersection of Queen and E. 22nd Streets.
According to the report of John Klostermann, Street/Sewer Maintenance Supervisor,
Operations and Maintenance was notified on March 5, 2002 by Police Dispatch that a
car had driven into an open manhole. When the crew arrived, they noticed that the ring
which holds the lid had cracked, allowing the lid to come off. The old ring was removed
and a new ring and lid were installed.
Mr. Klostermann reports that written records indicate there has not been a recent
problem with this lid. However, there has been a problem with this lid in the past.
Therefore, it is the recommendation of Mr. Klostermann that the claim be approved in
the amount of $85.44. The Legal Department concurs with his recommendation.

Dear Barry:
This letter will respond to the claim filed by Carla Kipper.
Our records show that we were notified by the police dispatch center on March 5, that a
car had driven into an open manhole. When the crew arrived, they noticed that the ring
which holds the lid, 'had cracked, allowing the lid to come off. The old ring was removed
and a new dng and lid was installed.
Our written records show that we have not had a recent problem with this lid. However,
the sewer maintenance crews believed that we had a problem with this lid in the past. It
is therefore my recommendation to pay the claim as filed.
If you need any additional information concerning this claim, please contact me.
Sincerely,
JOhn Klostermann
Street/Sewer Maintenance Supervisor
