Dubuque Fire Department Receives EMS Award
DUBUQUE, Iowa —The Dubuque Fire Department has received a 2016 Mission: Lifeline@ EMS Silver
Award from the American Heart Association for implementing quality improvement measures for the
treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks. Out of 931 emergency medical service (EMS)
providers in the state of Iowa, the Dubuque Fire Department is one of only four to meet the criteria to
receive an award in 2016.
Mission: Lifeline Emergency Medical System Recognition seeks to acknowledge the work, training, and
commitment by EMS agencies and medical first responders (MFRs) to improve the overall quality of care
for "STEMI" patients. According to the American Heart Association, STEMI is a common name for ST-
elevation myocardial infarction, which is a more precise definition for a type of heart attack. STEMI has a
substantial risk of death and disability and calls for a quick response.
As an EMS agency that delivers education in STEMI identification, provides access to 12 lead ECG
machines, and develops protocols derived from ACC/AHA STEMI guidelines, Dubuque Fire Department
medics are driving improvements in the care and outcomes of STEMI patients.
The 2016 Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Level Recognition Award is based upon achievements identified
through an agency's online application submission of data representative of care delivered in 2015. The
criteria to achieve the Mission: Lifeline EMS silver award is based on meeting achievement measures
aggregated annually for one year with no single measure scoring below 75 percent.
Mission: Lifeline is a coordinated, proactive system of care that turns first responders, hospitals and other
healthcare providers into a team that uses proven guidelines and best practices to treat patients suffering
from acute coronary syndrome, including both STEMI and non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome
(NSTE-ACS) heart attacks. More information on Mission: Lifeline is available at the American Heart
Association website at www.heart.orq
