ITEM TITLE: MS Run the US #orangearmy Day(November 1 , 2016) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type MS Run the US #orangearmy Day Proclamation Supporting Documentation 'fHL CIIY OF DUB E Mnsteyieie nn the 11i"i55ippi PROCLAMATION Whereas, MS Run the US, Inc. and the #orangeArmy is dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research, while also supporting those living with the disabilities related to MS. The running events focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle while inspiring individuals to maximize their capabilities by becoming more active and to help those in need; and Whereas, MS Run the US, Inc. was founded in 2009 by Wisconsin native Ashley Schneider. Inspired by her mother Jill Kumlien, who has lived with MS since 1980, Mrs. Schneider created MS Run the US, Inc., a 501(c)(3) government approved charitable organization to raise national disease awareness, funds to further MS research, and to help those living with disability due to their MS symptoms. All donation proceeds support research and MS disability programs through The National MS Society; and Whereas, in 2013, MS Run the US, Inc. launched their annual relay run across America for MS. The event started on April 15th, 2013 in Santa Monica, CA and was completed 3,100-miles and five months later in New York, NY on September 6th, 2013. The event engaged 15 runners from 10 different states and raised over $164,000 for the MS cause. Since then the MS Run the US Relay has continued as a yearly team event. Collectively since 2010 the event has run 20,984 miles across America and raised over $826,000 for the cause; and Whereas, in 2016, Curt Ehlinger was a member of an 18 member relay team completing an initial segment June 26 — July 3 from Des Moines, IA to Davenport, IA and a second segment July 31 — August 5 from Brookville, PA to Sunbury, PA. In total, Curt completed over 350 miles for MS in 2016 while helping the extended Dubuque community raise nearly $41,000 for MS Run the US while the team raised a record $231,000 for the year; and Whereas, the City of Dubuque recognizes the importance of raising awareness, supporting Multiple Sclerosis research, and promoting a healthy lifestyle; all while showing appreciation and admiration for the dedication exemplified by MS Run the US, Inc. and in particular the Orange Army. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HERBY PROCLAIM THE 1ST DAY OF NOVEMBER, 2016 AS "MS RUN THE US #ORANGEARMY DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND COMMENDS THIS OBSERVANCE TO ALL CITIZENS. ALL CITIZENS ARE ENCOURAGED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND WHAT THEY CAN DO TO SUPPORT FELLOW CITIZENS WITH MS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
