RE: Approval of Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program Agreement with
Holy Family School District, School Year 2016/2017
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to seek approval of the FY2016/2017 DARE
agreement between the City of Dubuque Police Department and the Holy Family School
District. Holy Family agrees to provide financial support for the DARE Program by
contributing $3,000.
BACKGROUND & DISCUSSION
For the past several years the Dubuque Police Department has provided DARE (Drug
Awareness Resistance Education) to Mazzuchelli Middle School. Through the DARE
Program, the Dubuque Police Department provides specially trained police officers to
teach life skills and resistance techniques to middle school students with the intent to
better prepare the students to resist the pressures to use illegal drugs. As part of this
cooperative arrangement, Holy Family will contribute $3,000. Additionally, the
agreement outlines the instruction and parent components of the program. The contract
review process begins in late July or early August for the current school year. The City
Legal Department and the Police Department have reviewed the agreement and concur
with the requirements.
RECOMMENDATION
We recommend approval of the attached agreement between the City of Dubuque and
Holy Family School District for the 2016/2017 school term, and accept the school
district's financial support of$3,000, retroactive to the start of 2016/2017 school year.
ACTION REQUESTED
Council approval of the attached DARE contract between the City of Dubuque and Holy
Family School District, and the city manager's signature accepting the agreement.
