BACKGROUND Since October 2014, City staff has met with Dr. Heyo Tjarks, DDS, regarding Dubuque hosting the 2016 Iowa Mission of Mercy Clinic, sponsored by the Iowa Dental Foundation. In September 2015, the City Council was provided information regarding the necessary requirements for the City to host the Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) Clinic, along with the presentation by Dr. Tjarks. The City Council approved a budget improvement package in the FY2017 budget for $13,732.25 to pay for the rental fee associated with the Five Flags Center. DISCUSSION Besides City staff time coordinating with the Iowa Dental Association IMOM event staff, the city donated the parking ramp use and meters around Five Flags, along with the use of two air compressors for two days. The value of these items totaled $1 ,720. The clinic treated 919 individual patients for a total of 1 ,268 patient encounters totaling over $875,000 worth of dental care. RomIowa M 2oi6 Iowa Mission of Mercy Summary Report Following are the data highlights from the Iowa Mission of Mercy (Iowa MOM) held September 23 &24, 2oi6, at the Five Flags Center Arena in Dubuque, Iowa. Data was collected through procedure codes gathered during the event and surveys disseminated to volunteers and patients. Patients were asked to complete a short survey after receiving services and volunteers completed an online survey after the event. In addition, key organizers and lead volunteers at the event were asked for feedback which will be incorporated into the planning and execution of future Iowa MOMs. Volunteer Participation Nine hundred seventy (970) professional and general volunteers registered to participate in this year's Iowa MOM. This number includes people who registered online prior to the event and also those who volunteered on site. Not only does the large number of volunteers represent the generosity of those in the greater Dubuque area, but, also those from across the state of Iowa and beyond. Four hundred forty nine (449) patients returned for additional treatment, bringing the total number of patient encounters to 1,368. Patients were not asked to provide any identification or information about their income, insurance status, or immigration status in order to access services. Exit surveys were completed by 853 patients. The survey requested basic demographic data but no identifying data. The patients received 5,348 procedures which totaled$865,264.00 of free oral health care. The total amount of prescription cost was $2,590.00. A breakdown is not available at this time. Since the first Iowa Mission of Mercy in 2oo8, almost i3,000 patients have received nearly$8 million in free oral health care!
