Economic Development Director Bill Baum is requesting review and approval of a
proposed design for an entrance sign for the Dubuque Industrial Center West to be
located at Chavenelle and Seippel Roads. The sign will also identifY the John G.
Bergfeld Recreation Area.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

INTRODUCTION
This memorandum presents for City Council review and approval a proposed
design for an entrance sign for the Dubuque Industrial Center West to be located
at Chavenelle and Seippel Roads. The sign will also identify the John G. Bergfeld
Recreation Area.
BACKGROUND
City staff has worked with Weitz Sign to design an appropriate entrance sign for
the west side industrial park. In addition, Dubuque Initiatives has reviewed a
similarly designed sign to be located at the entrance to the Dubuque Industrial
Center at the Northwest Arterial entrance. When Chavenelle Road is eventually
connected, the signs would be coordinated.
The sign as proposed is fabricated aluminum, approximately 10 feet high, 13 feet
wide and 3 feet deep. The lettering is routed from the face of the sign and
pushed through with acrylic letters that are internally illuminated. The aluminum
is painted. Colors have been selected that will blend with the brick and mulch
colors already in place in the median at Chavenelle and Seippel Roads. The sign
cost is approximately $13,772 plus electrical service. The City's budget for the
development of the industrial park included an allocation for signage that is still
available.
Dubuque Initiatives has been approached by City staff to assess their interest in
purchasing and installing a similarly designed sign at the entrance to the
Dubuque Industrial Center. At their last meeting, they approved the sign subject
to City Council approval of the sign design and installation at the west side park.
ACTION STEP
The action step is to provide staff direction regarding the proposed design for an
entrance sign at the Dubuque Industrial Center West. If approved, the City will
move ahead to order and install the sign, as will Dubuque Initiatives.
