Ware, Leisure Services Manager SUBJECT: Grand River Center Annual Report DATE: December 27, 2016 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to request the opportunity for Mitzi Yordy, Manager of the Grand River Center, to make a presentation to the City Council for the 2016 Annual Report. BACKGROUND Platinum Hospitality was hired as the private management company for the Grand River Center in 2003. The management contract has a requirement for an annual report to the City Council. Mitzi Yordy, Manager, would like to present activities in the current fiscal year, as well as plans for the future. The Grand River Center has become an integral part of the community since opening. The Conference and Education Center has been very successful by hosting local events and activities, as well as bringing conventions and building Dubuque's tourism industry. ACTION STEP I request time on the Council agenda for Mitzi to share the Annual Report. Promotional Strategy • The Grand River Center's promotional strategy evolves around the cooperative effort of the Dubuque Convention Visitors Bureau, local hotels, and area attractions in an effort to leverage destination messaging • Advertising in regional publications such as Midwest Meetings magazine targets meeting planners within a 300 mile radius • Public relations articles referencing the Grand River Center in professional publications provides quality exposure to the Grand River Center at the Port of Dubuque • Connecting through social media outlets including Linkedln, Instagram, and Faeebook • Launching of a new website in 2017 • Grand River Center named 2016 Best of MidAmerica Award Winner by Meetings Focus Magazine. I � 11. Sustainability Efforts In keeping with the city's green initiatives the Grand River Center has created a Green Meetings to offer meeting planners. This package provides: • Recycling bins in the meeting rooms and common spaces • The ability to recycle all administrative, sales and marketing papers • Pitchers of water instead of bottled water • Locally grown food, when available • Reducing carbon footprint by offering overnight stays at downtown hotels, instead of commuting daily • Access to the Riverwalk area for guests to enjoy the outdoors environment • Use of energy efficient lights and technological features • Water bottle filling stations for reusable water bottles • Waste reduction by composting food scraps, when available The City of Dubuque and the Sustainable City Network hosted the 9th Annual Growing Sustainable Communities Conference. As host of the event, $20,980 was paid to Platinum Hospitality for rental and food services at the Grand River Center.
